How To Find God
Matthew 7:7-8
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth;
and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
To travel around the earth in a straight line and end at your point of origin, you would travel about 24,902 miles. In recent years, scientists have determined that the size of the observable universe from one side to the other is approximately 93 million light years. A single light year is the distance that light travels in one year or about 365 days. 1 light year is equal to 6 trillion miles. What does this mean about the size of the universe? Simply put, it's too big to be traveled from edge to edge by any human within her lifetime. So, if God created everything in this universe in 6 literal days (24 hour period) and the Universe is so expansive, how do you and I find God? The Bible teaches that God is Omnipresent. This means that God is everywhere at once. You and I as humans are finite beings, which simply means that we are limited to being in just one place at a time. However, God is not finite, He is infinite. He is in/at all places all the time. How can He do/be this? He is God. How do you find God? You might be thinking, “I didn’t know He was lost!” [Dad Joke] But in reality, God is not lost nor has He ever been. However, since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, each human being has lost their way with God. Isaiah 59:2 describes it this way, “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” How do you and I find Him? We do not need to travel the expanse of our universe to find Him. He is not hiding from us. He is simply waiting for us to look for Him. He says, that “he that seeketh findeth.” So how do we find God?
Look For Him.
We look for God. Psalm 19:1 states, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” When we go outside and look up at the sky, whether it is day or night, we begin to see a reflection of the glory and majesty of the Creator of this universe, God. Psalm 115:3 also states, “But our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” Not only do we look for Him in creation. We also look for Him in our daily lives. We look for His hand to be at work in events of our daily lives. Isaiah 43:13 reads, ““Even from eternity I am He,
And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?” This is important for us to realize that God is in the universe. He is in the Heavens. He is at work in my daily life. He is at work in your daily life. Many times He is orchestrating circumstances to draw us into a relationship with Him. He placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and met with them in the cool of the evening to fellowship with them. He wants to meet with you and have fellowship with you daily too. If we want to find God then we must look for Him. Jeremiah 29:13 states, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” God clearly says that you and I can find Him when we search for Him with all of our heart. God wants us to find Him. He isn’t hiding from us, He wants us to search for Him, for in so doing, we will find Him.
Listen To Him.
Looking for God is the first step. Listening to God is the second step. It is important to listen for God’s voice and His direction. God wants us to listen to Him because He will lead us on the best path, the right path if we do. One very clear illustration of a man who listened to God and followed His leading is Abraham. Look at what God said to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3, “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Abraham listened to God and followed His direction. God blessed Abraham just as He promised He would.
So how would God speak to you and I today? He speaks to us through His Word, the Bible. God spoke and holy men of God penned or wrote down His words. 2 Peter 1:21 reads, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” It is important for us to get into God’s Word daily and listen for what He is saying. When we pray, we are talking to God, however, when we read His Word, we are listening for Him to speak to us.
God also speaks to us in our hearts individually. Jesus spoke these words in Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” So first, I ask you, do you hear His voice or have you heard His voice? Have you heard Jesus knocking on your heart’s door? Have you invited Him into your heart? If so, you may already be enjoying fellowship with Jesus (God the Son). If not, then I invite you to ask Him to come into your heart right now. Ephesians 3:17 says that Christ may dwell in your heart by faith. Trust, faith, or belief in Him and His shed blood on the cross as your only means to get to heaven is how you invite Him into your heart. You must believe that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again according to the Scriptures to be saved. Once you are saved, you can enjoy the fellowship that Jesus spoke of in Revelation 3:20. Hearing His voice is a part of listening to Him.
Learn From Him.
Once we look for God and begin listening to Him, it is vitally important to learn from Him. He said in Matthew 11:29-30, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Jesus wants us to learn from Him. God has clear directions for us and the path of life He wants us to take. If we do not learn from Him, we will learn, howbeit, from mistakes, from trying circumstances, from unwise people. We want to learn from God and follow His leading. Psalm 25:5 states, “Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.” Since God is our Savior, we can trust Him, not only for eternity but also in everyday life. The Psalmist goes on to write in Psalm 25:8-9, “Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.”
Finding God is vital to our lives. We find God by:
1) Looking for Him
2) Listening to Him
3) Learning from Him
We search for Him with all our hearts and find His salvation for eternity and find His direction for everyday life.
